THE SECRET TO LETTING GO

Katherine Fleet

Publication Date: February 1st

One summer can change everything...

Haunted with guilt after his girlfriend’s death, Daniel Hudson has no interest in committing to anyone. At the end of the summer, he’ll be leaving Florida for a new start in college. If only he could avoid the mysterious new girl in town, who seems every bit as naive and eccentric as she looks. Trouble is, she’s hard to ignore, with her beautiful piercing eyes, pitiful-looking dog, and unsettling tendency of finding trouble.

Clover Scott lived her whole life off the grid and arrives on the Gulf coast in search of her grandparents. She never expected to nearly drown, or get caught in a hurricane, or fall in love with the boy who rescues her. Now, she has a chance to rewrite her life’s story, to finally fit in somewhere, but Daniel wants answers about her past. When the police start asking questions about the disappearance of her parents, she must make a choice: go to jail or confess her secrets—even if they might destroy her chance at a happily-ever-after.

Review

**I received a copy through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review**

I LOVE the cover, and at first I kind of decided to read this book because of it, I also didn’t read the synopsis and it worth, I mean, all what happened was new for me, like I didn’t know who was she looking for; anyway, this book made me feel from love to pain, yep, sometimes it did make me cry…

Or maybe it was the excitement of finally reading something, no idea. After days without read anything new, not because I don’t have anything to read, it was because it’s summer and I want to spend time with my family before be back at college —and also a little reminder of the release day—, I started reading and from the beginning I was fascinated by it, there were parts I didn’t like, but it’s usual, even there are books with a lot of those moments, but this one, omg, this one made me read without stop.

The Secret to Letting Go by Katherine Fleet, tells us the story of two teenagers, in the course of the book we got to know their very different lives, specially their past. There's love, grief, pain, sacrifice, evil, BUT also, good and kind people.

Daniel is a kind, friendly, and caring person; after his girlfriend’s death, his life turned very sad, so now he’s looking forward to go to college, and to have a new start, leaving all behind. But before that he only has to spend one last summer in Canna Point, Florida. One day while he was working on his dad’s store, he met a quite, naïve, and eccentric girl, who from the beginning attracted him.

Clover is the new girl in town, searching for her grandparents, with what she hopes can have a new life. She has a really unhappy past, and a big secret that can destroy her relationship with Daniel. With Daniel’s company, Clover experiences a lot of new things that most of the normal teenagers would have already experienced—like go to the cinema—, sometimes there are little, simple things, and others are those things complete different, like falling in love with someone.

The first time they met, Daniel felt bad for Clover, and decided to help her, so what was supposed to be the only one time they see each other became in other… and another. While the story goes, we see Daniel kind of trying to avoid her, and there’s always something happening that made that difficult for him, but also, her personality just makes him want to know more about her, including what she’s hiding. Of course, there are more characters that immerse yourself more in the main plot of the story, like Amelia, his twin sister, or his best friend, Sam; those two have a distinct story of which we can see a little, and let you wanting their story —or at least that was what happened to me.

I really enjoyed and loved the story, the author’s writing, the way she makes you that even when you’re reading about bad, sad things, you can connect with the characters, and also it being an easy way to follow; because we can understand their personalities, their past, and why they do what they do. For a debut, I think it’s a wonderful start.

For me, along with all what I’ve already described, the key word here is TRUST —capital letters and all—, for some reason I can’t complete understand why most of the time while I was reading, that word was in my head, maybe because when you have a big secret as Clover’s you do really have to TRUST to get to confess it, not that easy, you know?

A book totally recommended, not just for those who like YA.

Book: +4.5
